The example of the believers, in their mutual love and mercy for one another is like the example of one body, if one part feels pain, then all of the body suffers in sleeplessness and fever.” (Bukhari)
It's far more preferable to keep friends who are believers. But it's no reason not to be friends with people who do not believe exactly in that which you believe. In order for people who do not believe to learn is to witness it by association, so look at it as an opportunity to share your belief system and break down barriers of ignorance and misunderstanding of our deen, but it doesn't mean force your beliefs onto anyone just be open to questions, also accept that they may not want to convert either but fostering greater understanding and dialogue is important.
“Content yourself with those who pray to their Lord morning and evening, seeking His approval, and do not let your eyes turn away from them out of desire for the attractions of this worldly life, and do not yield to those whose hearts We have made heedless of Our remembrance, those who follow their own low desires, those whose ways are unbridled.” (Quran 18:28)
I have to be mindful that a friend is a true friend if he accepts you're beliefs and will respect you for it...
